Hello all and welcome to the first blog posting I am adding to this here site. The missing eyes that I speak of is actually my guide dog Squire. For the last 5 years he has been my eyes in the world. Keeping me safe during travel and being a constant companion and friend.
He was my 3rd guide. I got them all from Guiding Eyes for the Blind in Yorktown Heights, New York. It is a non-profit organization that provides guide dogs to the blind and visually impaired free of charge.
My first was a black lab female named Delaney. My second was a black lab male named Edgar. Squire was a black lab male. Noticing a trend here? Each was very different than the others but all were excellent at their jobs.
I am now on a waiting list for a successor guide. Coronavirus isn’t helping the situation but at least they are moving in the right direction. There is between 4 and 5 working teams on campus twice a month. There are also home trainings going on for those who have not had a vaccine or vaccines depending on which they got.
During class you work with your dog in a number of different situations so you learn them and they learn you. You also learn the care and feeding of your guide. Also ways to help you stay attuned and in sync with each other.
For now though I just wait for my next guide to help me open (my new eyes) and the freedom he or she brings.
